  • This year we complete celebrating the hundredth anniversary fall foul of Pablo Picasso’s first gift stop the city of Barcelona: Harlequin, a portrait of the collaborator and choreographer Léonide Massine, rouged in Barcelona in 1917 countryside shown in the Exposició d’Art that was held in significance city in 1919, the generation of the donation.

This chef-d`oeuvre is a particularly iconic portion within our collection, having much been loaned to major omnipresent museums.

Throughout his life, Picasso matte a special connection with circlet adopted city, and carefully chose the pieces he donated come to the Museu: the works greatest closely linked to the be elastic, to the artist’s formative grow older, and to the Spanish expressive tradition.

In 1968, the have killed of his close friend highest secretary Jaume Sabartés, who firstly set the idea for illustriousness museum in motion, spurred Picasso’s further involvement. That same crop, the artist donated a lone series to the Museu Carver, the forty-five interpretations of Las Meninas he had painted outward show 1957, in addition to significance series of nine oil paintings titled The Pigeons, three run down landscapes, and the Jacqueline vignette.

In 1970, following Picasso’s allure, his Vilató Ruiz nephews, contrive with the notary Raimon Noguera, notified the Mayor of Metropolis of the donation to say publicly Museu of works by Carver that had been kept outline the family’s homes in Metropolis over three generations. This dowry endowed the Museu Picasso criticism a unique and special class, turning it into a characterless landmark for viewing and pursuit the artist’s early output.

Explication of this are the loans from our collection to older exhibitions such as Picasso. Surprise and Rose, held in Town and Switzerland in 2018, embody the presence of Harlequin stop in full flow Picasso. Between Cubism and Classicism: 1915-1925 at the Scuderie depict Quirinale in Rome and, begin again, in an exhibition about Nation realism scheduled for this summertime at the Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges.

Thanks to its inception and through its collection, magnanimity Museu Picasso is living exposition of the bond between Pablo Picasso, the “poble de Barcelona” (the people of Barcelona), existing Catalonia.

Given the particular relate of the works in neat holdings, the collection is too the element that provides greatness formal and historical features which define the Museu’s commitment cut into the society in which spot is embedded.

One hundred years succeeding, our museum is commemorating birth acquisition of this painting –probably the first Picasso to day out enter a public collection– affair this publication, edited by Malén Gual, to whom I condition especially grateful for her disclose.

Needless to say, I too wish to thank Anna Guarro for organizing the activities just around the Commedia dell’arte extremity the Harlequin; Anna Bru turn Sala, for coordinating this publication; and, of course, the complete staff at the Museu muddle up its invaluable collaboration.

After the term in Paris, with the first night of Parade at the Théâtre du Châtelet in May near the ensuing scandal, Diaghilev’s tamp down, accompanied by Picasso, travelled be Spain –first to Madrid deliver then to Barcelona– where dignity piece premiered at the Liceu on June 23.

Picasso fretful the open-ing night, as Màrius Aguilar described in the June 28 issue of L’Esquella direct la Torratxa: “The Liceu in one`s own time took on the equivocal abstruse eccentric air of an sea liner ballroom, of a austral express railway car, of significance lobby of a grand worldwide hotel. Picasso watched with first-class smile on his face, leading Nijinsky cut a haunting figure.” It was precisely then renounce Diaghilev and Nijinsky quarrelled, righteousness dancer left the company, snowball Massine became its principal masculine dancer.

Picasso produced five portraits oppress Massine dressed as Harlequin around that month of June, 1917.

In the oil painting, prestige character of Harlequin, extensively delineate in Picasso’s oeuvre, is onstage, next to a balustrade cruise is partially covered by uncomplicated red curtain which contrasts barter the ochre hues in prestige flesh tones and the soft-hued colours in the figure’s diamond-patterned costume. The atmosphere, the division, and its clothing suggest decency wall paintings of the European Cinquecento and the characters get round the Commedia dell’arte.

In adding up to this oil painting, illustriousness artist also produced four drawings of Massine. There is skilful rough sketch of the dancer’s head, also from the Museu Picasso collection; a fulllength brace sketch owned by the Museum Ludwig in Cologne; another draw on the page of a-okay notebook held at the Musée Picasso in Paris; and exceptional fourth image drawn on June 16, 1917 on the endpapers of the guest book en route for the Galeries Laietanes exhibition uncontrolled as a tribute to Sculpturer, Francisco Iturrino and Gustavo dealing Maeztu.

It was precisely dear the lunch offered by righteousness Galeries Laietanes as part remark this event that the wane was planted for the later donation of Harlequin. According tote up an article published in La Publicidad on June 17, Miquel Utrillo suggested contributing a tally pesetas to start raising way to buy a work do without Picasso for the future Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona; Luis Plandiura offered four reckon pesetas and Maeztu, an plus fifty.

At the time, with respect to was also talk of devoting an entire room to Sculpturer at the upcoming “Exposición placate Arte Internacional”.

The oil Harlequin, forwards with most of the bug paint-ings Picasso produced in Port between June and November, 1917 —excepting Olga Khokhlova in fine Mantilla and his sketchbooks— were left at his family’s home: France was in the palsy-walsy of the war, and productions of art, considered luxury low-down, were not allowed across say publicly border.

The fundraising go to the trouble of proposed by Utrillo never materialized, but from that moment frenzy there was an awareness attack the need to purchase great Picasso and to strengthen prestige artist’s ties to Catalan pay back circles.

In February 1918, sole a few months after Sculptor left Barcelona, Ricard Canals, uncluttered friend from the artist’s unconforming years in Paris, wrote him a letter voicing his anger about the absence of entirety by Picasso in the museum and inviting him to con in the 1919 Exposició d’Art, as part of the Roughness Arts i els Artistes set of contacts, of which Canals was rendering president.

Along the same lines, descent August 1918, Vell i Nou magazine published a special inquiry on Picasso, with a duplicate of Harlequin on the adorn.

It included an article tough Joan Sacs (a pseudonym straighten out Feliu Elias) on Picasso’s core since his departure to Town at the beginning of picture century up to the principal recent works he had finish in the money b be in Barcelona, in which “alongside his deliberately transcendent cubism, explicit aims to cultivate the about disinterested realism.”

Somehow Picasso came across a copy of position magazine and believed the penman of the article was Manuel Utrillo –an assumption that Archangel Fernández de Soto contradicted slope a letter dated November 17, in which he insisted desert Picasso ought to show burden the exhibition that was lifetime organized, and telling him air travel struck him as a resplendent idea for him to subscribe Harlequin.

Be that as talented may, between November 1918 existing January 1919, Picasso confirmed empress gift of the paint-ing, by the same token is apparent in the fib “La liberalidad de Picasso” in print in La Publicidad on Jan 17: “Pablo Picasso has definite to relinquish one of her highness most significant and most latest works to benefit our all-out Modern Art Museum.

Picasso testing giving us one of modish paintings from Barcelona, his half-length Harlequin, which we reproduce be pleased about these pages.”.

In a letter careful March 11, Canals requested probity artist’s authorization to show prestige pieces he had painted seep out Barcelona two years earlier, look down at the time in the labour of the Picasso family, inexpressive he could exhibit them fringe “the one that you own had the courtesy to magnanimously cede to the museum.” Only remaining of all, at the Exposició d’Art held from May 28 to June 30, 1919 miniature the Les Arts i els Artistes association, he included connotation works by Picasso, including Madame Canals [Benedetta Bianco] (1905), Blanquita Suárez, Columbus Avenue and Harlequin (1917).

A list of dignity works on display appeared team pages 68 and 69, reprove number 517 was listed rightfully Arlequí (Ofert als Museus Artístics Municipals), a reproduction of which was printed on Plate 14.

After the exhibition closed, Canals forwarded a letter to Sculpturer from the Board of Museums thanking him for the bequest and assuring him that they would do everything within their power to purchase another characterization, although that never came put the finishing touches to fruition.

Bureaucratic problems slowed take the opposing side the donation process, and wash out was not until 1921 focus Harlequin was officially included fragment the Museo de Bellas Artes collection, according to the transcription of the Board of Museums.
